I’ve formed a process in the studio that unpacks the notions of time, borders, separation, and expansion to talk about individual and collective behavior. To imagine how group dynamics manifest through systems of behavior bearing similarities with nature on almost every scale. I have developed a visual vocabulary using symbolic signifiers of Microbes, Groups of Birds, and Chairs to contextualize ideas of freedom and restraint, escape than occupied. Allowing both chance and intention to propagate personal and epistemological narratives through abstraction and figuration in Painting. In search of forming controlled chaotic environments that have an underline order to them. I have devised a coded language by assigning letters to each chair part -the process functions as an algorithm to deconstruct chair parts in their atomized states as collectives. Excerpts from Sufi poetry are further coded into the fictive language to deploy context into the paintings, analogous to Egyptian Hieroglyphics. The script can be deciphered via a reference key, which I can now read and write. The paintings also contain thin, translucent paint layers using an additive layering process. Every pour of paint is dried in a natural condition toying with time and memory in ways nature evolves, taking up to 2-3 months, demarcating territories that I now call Settlers. The work invites the viewers to moments of renegotiation, re-invention, and reconciliation by re-introducing a familiar functional object such as a chair that contains a purpose and agency to become a mode of language, a code, and a pattern to imitate an ultimate expression of nature - In the fall of 2017, I started growing microbes at the RISD NatureLab with a box of 12 Petri dishes, swabs, and gloves to find out how they colonize on a micro-scale. In the first test, I collected samples of organisms that grow on inorganic things such as a leaf, tree, shoe, bike, etc. It took a cycle of 24 hours for the bacteria to appear from their dormant state; within the next cycle, the colonies kept multiplying. My first attempt to grow these organisms in the petri dish was not enough until I preceded my second and third tests, including samples from public spaces, including a public park and some fast food joints. For the third test, I took human skin samples of 12 people: I divided them into four groups, sets of those associated in close approximate. Samples were placed as individuals, in pairs and groups, with tests running for 12 days at 21 Celsius. These species expand and grow with the potential ability to communicate and reproduce by the billions from a single cell, instigating a process of colonization that seemingly protects and demarcates. When further magnified, you can see glimpses of a complex cosmos, both stirring and revivifying human imagination. Observing these morphologies of colony growth is an intentional curiosity to understand if such a thesis could link to human territories and divisions. We draw visible and invisible boundaries in sociological spaces, constricting our sense of individuality. The question of belonging seems pertinent no matter the scale and emphasizes the need to constantly struggle to understand the myriad of social behaviors, stigmas, and human persistence and preservation. But how do we navigate our current understanding if divisions are potentially the inexorable archetype, even on a micro-scale? Predator and prey relationships in animals have become a way for me to categorize opposing behaviors, propagating and self-classifying human behavior to depict a sense of duality in all of us. The collective can provide sustenance, protection, and growth and can also be ominous. So, this symbiosis leads to my investigation of systems within systems and ideas around binaries. Each sample was cultured in Petri dishes under carefully controlled conditions for a duration of 12 days. The primary aim was to observe and analyze the similarities and differences in bacterial colony behavior thriving on human hosts with varying social tendencies. cm 2015 The solo show ‘Murmuration’ examines natural systems by mathematically deconstructing the phenomena of murmuration by starlings. The sublimely gracious movement of the group forming, merging, and almost melting away in real time is an incredibly choreographed display; its visual beauty belies its strategic and existential necessity. These tiny birds protect themselves from the prey, forming and moving in unison within seconds, appearing to be larger each day before they rest on trees for the night. No bird collides as they migrate in this mass performance instead swarms in defense, analogous to human beings acting with a hive mind. I am extremely drawn to this natural occurrence; hence this body of work became trying to understand the flight of these birds with such precision. To create this body of work, I decided to use wallpapers that are excessively used to fabricate offices and residences in this region. The readymade wallpapers were brought from ‘Dragon Mart’ supplies ‘Made in China goods. Dragon Mart caters to all sorts of industries selling all goods and is a type of brand to locals. Using a UV printing method, the construction sites' images were layered directly on these industrial wallpapers repeating, duplicating, and reiterating the city's image. The final layer was a painted depiction of manual workers, their journeys, totems of their everyday lives, and the dreams and wishes they had as immigrants. The mural paintings consisted of intricate patterns with labor-intensive methods to depict narratives that synthesized my formal concerns and became a description of the interaction with marginalized communities, which resulted in my thesis show,’ Binary Lives,’ in 2007. The paintings depicted an extracted pattern of tiger skin, a natural predatory animal, as a symbolic reference to talk about opposing relationships. The pattern was then repeated using mathematical sequences to achieve a mesh-like structure, and it was then deconstructed to break the order of the arrangement to transcend visual complexity. Marginalized communities and social matrices that dominated the city’s landscape made me think of how people unite and form different social groups and why some exist in small groups. These groups appeared seemingly interwoven within each other. They made me think of connecting anthropological responses to natural systems that appear disorderly, fragmented, and disarrayed yet have an inward order, making me think of fractal relationships.
